Nine Planetary Deities of Hinduism

In Hinduism nine planetary deities are getting importance as they have significant efffect on everyone's life. They all are worshipped and celebrated as other major gods and goddesses like Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Shri Shakthi and Shri MahaLaxmi. Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu (Uranus), Ketu (Neptune) are nine planetary gods. All these nine planetary deities can be either malefic or benefic according to their astrological positions. Both malefic and auspicious planets are the basic elements of the Hinduism and any one who likes to get blessings of Supreme Gods of Hinduism should also pray and worship planetary gods. In Hinduism all these planets in the solar system get their names as follows

Sun ---------- Surya Narayanar or Ravi

Moon -------- Shri Chandra Bhagavan or Shri Soma Bhagavan

Mercury ----- Shri Budha Bhagavan

Mars ---------Shri Angaraha Bhagavan

Venus ------- Shri Sukra Bhagavan

Jupiter ------ Shri Guru Bhagavan or Lord Dakshinamoorthy or Brahispathy

Saturn ------ Shri Shaneeshwara Bhagavan

Uranus ------ Shri Rahu Bhagavan

Neptune ----- Shri Ketu Bhagavan

Tribulations by Malefic Planets

It is said that unlucky people who have unfavorable positions of planets in their astrological chart are getting a lot of tribulations in their life. However, many people overcome the situation faithfully praying the same malefic planets and other gods and goddesses of Hinduism. Though malefic planets like Lord Saturn, Lord Rahu and Lord Ketu are giving many problems to humans, they are also blessing all wealth and health to their faithful devotees. They are merely standing as securities for the superior gods and goddesses of Hinduism. Accdording to Hinduism the people who can really stand with the tribulations of malefic planets can get real spiritual enlightenment and blessings of other major gods and goddesses.

I'm so new to this I don't understand. I was told to befriend Saturn by using The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra which relates to Shiva and to strengthen my Sun (I'm looking for a mantra as good as the one I found for Saturn). You don't mention Shiva in your Saturn description. Why? Does a planetary deity report up to a higher deity like Shiva?

ratnaveera profile image

ratnaveera 3 years ago from Cumbum Hub Author

Dear Steefen, Thank you for coming here and your nice comments. In Hinduism it is believed that all the nine planetary deities are the ones who will work as the servants of other major Gods like Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Among them Lord Saturn has special power and will give a lot of troubles to the people when he is in a malefic position. It is also said that favorable position of Lord Saturn in a particular astrological chart would be responsible for the good health and wealth. So, many Hindus in their daily life will give great importance to this God Saturn and He is considered to be equal to Lord Shiva.
